Born by the sea, with a wide horizon and an instinct for looking beyond the obvious, Pieter is the selector behind Floating World Music. Shaped by Balearic breezes, dusty vinyl, and late-night frequencies, his approach to music has always been open-ended: curious about where a record comes from, but equally interested in where it might take you.

 

The journey began in the early ’90s in Ghent, Belgium — a city pulsing with underground energy. Between lectures and late nights, records were bought at Music Mania and put to work in the student bars of the Overpoort district. What started as a student job behind the decks gradually became something much bigger.

 

Drawn to the hypnotic pulse of New Beat and, later, the stripped-down aesthetic of minimal techno, a musical identity began to take shape — organic, curious, and always evolving. The Balearic spirit opened things up further: a way of listening that allowed a dub record, a forgotten disco cut, or an ambient passage to belong in the same story.

 

What followed was a steady flow of shows and residencies across Europe, taking him from Ghent to London and Berlin, and from intimate rooms to festival crowds. Radio became a second home. At Studio Brussel, selecting records meant working with a different kind of intimacy: no dancefloor in front of him, just a connection with listeners somewhere on the other side of the speakers.

 

Today, Floating World Music moves between Balearic warmth, leftfield dub, cosmic disco, organic techno, and ambient soundscapes. Slow-burning grooves meet spacious electronics; familiar sounds surface in unexpected company. The thread is less about tempo or genre than about atmosphere, tension, and the feeling one record leaves for the next.

 

Stepping away from club bookings did not mean leaving music behind. Radio, mixes, and an enduring appetite for discovery kept that connection alive. Writing became another way to explore it — tracing the histories, places, and people behind the records, and asking what club culture means beyond the night itself.

Floating World Music brings these pursuits together through mixtapes, selections, and long-form stories. It is a space for new discoveries and records worth returning to, for shared listening, and the occasional unexpected turn.
